Make the most of your time and energy when traveling. Whether you’re going to the airport for a business or personal trip, follow these 4 helpful tips to enhance your overall experience and travel like a pro.
1. Go Digital
Download the app for each travel company you’re working with - airline, rideshare, hotel, etc. Having these apps on your mobile devices is the best way to keep track of your reservations and also to receive prompt updates. Updates can include boarding announcements or delays or cancellation notices but they can also include deals or extra savings opportunities! Having a digital version of your boarding pass is also a great option instead of carrying a paper boarding pass and just hoping it doesn’t get damaged or lost.
2. Skip to the Front of the Line
Waiting in line to go through airport security can be time consuming but the good news is that there are ways to expedite your experience.
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers TSA PreCheck which makes the security screening smoother for approved fliers by not requiring to remove your shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptop or light jacket. The application process includes an in-person requirement to provide fingerprints and additional information but then once approved, the PreCheck membership lasts for five years. Plan ahead and apply well before your next flight to ensure you are approved in time.
Another option for expedited security screening is CLEAR. CLEAR involves a more enhanced application process than TSA PreCheck but then allows fliers to go to the front of both the regular and TSA PreCheck security lines. CLEAR and TSA PreCheck are separate screening options and having both can save you more time but is not required. Similar to TSA PreCheck, there is an in-person application component to CLEAR so plan ahead to ensure you can be approved well before your next trip. Once approved, CLEAR membership is on an annual basis.
Airline Priority Lanes
Check with your airline when booking your flight to see what options are available at your airport for express security lanes. Some airlines have priority security lanes for First Class or elite status passengers. These airline-specific priority lanes are typically much shorter than regular security lines and follow all TSA security guidelines.
3. Pack Light
Packing light is always a good idea regardless of your travel destination or length of travel. One way to travel light is actually to check your bag rather than carrying everything with you on the plane. Checking your bag allows you to travel more hands-free which is wonderful if you plan to shop, eat or just relax while at the airport. And with many more people carrying on their luggage, you won't have to fight for space in the upper compartment on the plane and instead can get settled into your seat more quickly to enjoy your flight. Checking a bag can be especially handy if you have to make a connecting flight because you will have less items to carry on and off each of your flights.
4. Arrive Early
Start your trip off right by getting to the airport early. Having more time before your flight departure means you have more time for fun after getting through security. Relax at an airport lounge if you have a membership. Enjoy a pre-flight beverage or snack at a restaurant. Pick up a good magazine or book. Shop for a fun travel outfit or accessories. The options are endless. Over the years, airports have increased the quality of their shopping and dining options so make sure to take advantage. If available, download the airport’s app prior to your trip to easily find available dining and activities.
Cheers!
