Whether it’s the holidays or you have guests coming over for a birthday or other celebration, it’s important to make sure your furry loved ones are comfortable and safe. While entertaining for special events can be exciting, they can also cause extra stress on pets. Here are some ways that events can impact our pets:

• Many human foods⁠ & treats available
• More people⁠ around the house
• Bright or changing lights
• Change in pet’s routine⁠
• Different smells
• ⁠Loud noises⁠ 

The good news is that there are things you can do to ensure your pets have an enjoyable and safe time too.  Below are our top three recommendations.

1. Provide a Separate Space

If you’re having guests at your home, consider providing a separate quiet room for your pet during the gathering or you could crate them as well. If weather permits, consider having your pet outside during your gathering. Choose the option that best helps your pet be most comfortable.

2. Keep Pets Away From Candy

While many pets like to sniff and taste human foods and treats, many human foods such as chocolate, can be toxic or even deadly to pets.  As such it is important to keep pets away from all candy and chocolate during events. This might mean keeping the treats on a higher table top or counter. You could also consider adding a covering or decorated lid to platters containing special treats to keep them protected and away from pets.

3. Ensure Trash is Securely Contained

Similar to the last tip, it’s important to ensure your trash is securely contained to eliminate any accidental consumption of food scraps by your pet. While many human foods won’t be lethal if ingested by pets, it may make them sick. And a sick pet isn’t fun for the pet or for you. Consider keeping the trash bins outside of the house during the gathering if your pets will be wandering freely inside.
